Which Mukhi Rudraksha to Wear: 1 to 21 Mukhi Explained

In tradition, each mukhi (the number of natural lines on the bead) is linked to a deity and a theme: the 5 Mukhi is linked with Kalagni Rudra and worn for a calm mind, while the 7 Mukhi is linked with Goddess Mahalakshmi and worn for prosperity. Most people choose the mukhi whose traditional theme matches their intention, and the 5 Mukhi is the usual starting point because tradition holds that anyone can wear it.

Rudraksha by mukhi: 1 to 21

Each number is linked in tradition to a deity

Real Bambhole beads from our catalogue, 1 to 21 Mukhi, with the deity tradition associates with each. These are traditional beliefs, not promised results. Tap a bead to see that mukhi in the shop.

What "mukhi" means

Mukhi means face. On a Rudraksha it is the number of natural lines that run from one end of the bead to the other. Each line corresponds to a seed chamber inside, so a 5 Mukhi bead has five lines and five chambers. Beads from 1 to 21 Mukhi are recognised, and the lower and middle mukhis are far more common than the higher ones.

How people choose a mukhi

  1. By intention. Tradition links each mukhi with a deity and a theme. Most people start with the theme that matches what they are seeking, as listed in the table below.
  2. By guidance. Many families follow the advice of a priest, a guru or an astrologer, and some choose by their ruling planet. If you follow such a tradition, its guidance comes first.
  3. By how you will wear it. A single bead, a pendant, a bracelet or a mala each suits a different bead size and origin. See our Nepal vs Indonesian guide.
  4. By budget. Higher mukhis are rare and cost much more. A smaller Java bead can make a rare mukhi affordable.

If you are still unsure, the 5 Mukhi is the traditional default: it is the most widely worn Rudraksha and tradition holds that anyone can wear it. Our complete 5 Mukhi guide explains why.

Can you wear more than one mukhi?

Yes. Many people wear several different mukhis together, for example in a bracelet or on one thread, and tradition generally allows it. Choose beads whose sizes sit comfortably together, and follow your own family's or guru's practice if it says otherwise.

A note on higher mukhis

Beads above about 14 Mukhi are rare, especially from Nepal, which makes them expensive and a frequent target for carved fakes. For any higher mukhi, insist on an independent lab report for that exact bead. Every Bambhole bead has one; see how to check if a Rudraksha is real.
